Marketing Idea No. 89 – Things to do in gas stations in a long line

October 23, 2007by Shahriar Amin6

This idea is contributed by Sadique Salim

One thing you can count on when you are going to load gas in any gas station in the country is a long line. Blame it on lack of CNG stations, blame it on the increasing number of four-wheelers, but its a reality that many dread and all live with.

But we can turn this dreadful situation into an opportunistic one. If we cant add more gas stations, can we add more activity in this stations so that whenever we go for gas we can make some effective utilization of time?

Its not a new concept. CLUB HP and other different gas and oil stations have successfully merged something as dreary as taking gas into an experience. We can follow suit.

Just think of the number of things you can do in a gas station. It can have a news stand, a snack corner, a music corner just to start with. How about a video games corner? How about a boutique? How about a small massage parlor? Well maybe I am getting way ahead…but this can be a reality.

What is sorely needed is some brand to recognize the opportunity and tie up with existing gas stations.

    Good Idea Salim Bhai.

But one thing possibly you also have noticed is that the ambience of a gas station in urban India or Thailand differs a lot from what we have here in Bangladesh. Gas stations there have credit card payment facilities and long queues are an unusual scenario. you are right there are snacks corners or an icecream parlour where people can drop by and pick something.

But i guess we have a different set of crowd going to our gas stations…usually drivers of CNG run vehicles stuck in long queues(taxies, cars, trucks) and not their owners. moreover, they constantly need to pull or drive their vehicles…so, we should think of some activities that would not require them to go far and rather would help them generate a little bit of extra income…something that would ensure proper utilization of the time spent…

Ya this is true. In our country the croud is different. But this can be changed if we change the scenario. We can see lots of women are now doing there kitchen shopping in different places like Agora, Minabazar but they were not that much comfortable in BAZAR. So, by changing the scenario many things can be changed. Different stations can be made for CNG taxi and Cars. There are many self-driven cars in Dhaka. They will be encouraged by that types of innitiatives. And the addition of cradit card payment will be another added advantage.

We have an advantage in our country that we keep driver for our vehicles. So, the owner can keep himself/herself in other activities while the driver is busy with the filling.

And the way traffic is increasing it will be a very nice initiative. People want that type of facilities. Someone needs to turn that into need. So, I think this idea is a very worhtwile and pragmatic idea.

Remember, people never thought in bangladesh that mobile will be a necessity in their life. So, it is always possible.

Beside the concept of credit card and seperate stations fr different vehicles what other ideas you think should be initiated in our CNG sector of Bangladesh. Any technical aspects maybe??

Introducing the concept of US gas stations will definetly bring the change. Not a masage booth but news stand, internet, house hold goods, dollar items, ATM machines or even a window fr reg post office can be introduced.
